Rutherglen is about an hour’s drive from Tocumwal, making it the perfect day trip destination. Famous for its wineries and world-class wine, this quaint Victorian town has plenty of other things to do and see. Here are the ones you should definitely check out.
Rutherglen Gold Battery
Situated on the northern fringe of the township and an easy walk from the town’s centre, the Rutherglen Gold Battery is a must-visit for culture and history buffs. It was built in the late 1890s to help the locals crush quartz from nearby quartz reefs and extract the gold they contain. The battery was restored in 2011 and is now offering guided tours and video demonstrations for those who are interested to learn more about the town’s history.
Of all the wineries in Rutherglen to visit, perhaps the most popular of them all is Campbells Wines. Established more than 140 years ago, Campbells Wines produce some of the tastiest wines in the Rutherglen Wine Region. They have an excellent wine selection available for tasting.
Scion Vineyard and Winery
Located only 2km south of Rutherglen township, Scion Vineyard and Winery is another must-visit if you’re looking for things to do near Tocumwal. Apart from tasting the wine you can wander through Scion’s eight-acre vineyard and enjoy a guided tour of their winery. The staff are more than happy to talk to you about their wine production process.
The Carlyle Loop
If you want to see the local sights on a bicycle, why don’t you consider biking the length of the Carlyle Loop? The Carlyle Loop will take you through the different streets of Rutherglen, allowing you to explore the area and visit popular sites such as the Shores Flats picnic area and the All Saints Estate.
Granthams Bend is a large reserved area located just 10 km north of the township. The open scrubland provides a good area for walking and bush biking. There are also nice sandy beaches that you can visit, especially on the apex of the bend.
